American retailer Walmart has marked a significant milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) charging initiatives, announcing that its proprietary, owned-and-operated charging network has reached 100 locations. The growth has been particularly rapid, as the company opened its very first charging site in April 2025.
Rapid Expansion of Charging Infrastructure
The 100th site was recently opened at a Walmart store situated in Monument, Colorado. A majority of these 100 facilities have become operational since the beginning of this year, demonstrating the swift expansion of the network in a short time frame. Walmart continues to grow the charging infrastructure by integrating chargers into its existing properties, placing units in convenient spots where customers frequently shop for their weekly needs.
Looking ahead, the company has stated plans to expand these chargers to ‘thousands’ of locations, encompassing both Walmart and Sam’s Club stores nationwide.
Network Capabilities and Consumer Benefits
While other third-party providers, such as Electrify America, had previously operated public charging stations at Walmart locations, the in-house brand provides customers with a recognized and reliable service. This proprietary system emphasizes ease of use and high charging speeds. Each facility is equipped with between 8 and 16 charging bays, capable of delivering speeds up to 400kW. Furthermore, members enrolled in Walmart’s paid loyalty program, Walmart+, are eligible for reduced rates when charging.
Walmart maintains a dedicated site providing a comprehensive list of all currently operating locations, alongside an even larger list detailing upcoming sites across the United States.
Executive Commentary on Growth
Walmart leaders emphasized that the network’s expansion is designed to make EV charging more accessible to communities and enhance the customer experience. Shayne Wahlmeier, Senior Vice President of Walmart Energy, commented on the achievement, stating: “By expanding EV fast charging at Walmart locations across the country, we’re giving drivers a dependable way to charge while they’re in the store. Reaching 100 sites is an important milestone, and our broad footprint positions us to make EV charging more accessible for communities while expanding the ways we serve our customers.”
Adam Happel, General Manager of Walmart Retail EV Charging, focused on the customer experience, adding: “When a customer pulls into a Walmart to charge, we want the experience to feel as reliable and effortless as the rest of their shopping trip. We’re proud to reach 100 sites, but our focus remains on building a network customers can count on every time they charge with us.”
