U.S. stocks experienced a mixed week, with major indices posting overall losses despite gains recorded on Friday. The cryptocurrency market, however, saw significant upward momentum, while investors remain highly focused on shifting dynamics in the bond market and potential geopolitical developments regarding Iran.
Market Performance on Friday
On Friday, stocks generally rose, capping off a volatile trading week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) increased by roughly 1%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) gained 0.4%. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) also climbed 0.4%, reversing losses seen the previous day.
Despite these daily gains, the major indexes collectively finished the week down. The overall pressure on riskier assets was attributed to volatility within the bond market. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (BTC-USD) continued its ascent, reaching a value of $77,000 and recording its strongest week in two years, posting a gain of 6.59%.
Bond Market and Geopolitical Focus
Market attention has been heavily focused on the bond market following announcements from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Bessent outlined plans to expand the scope of bond buybacks, proposing to increase the program’s size beyond $4 billion for each issue. Regarding this initiative, Bessent stated, “Part of it is signaling here to show that we believe yields don’t reflect the underlying fundamentals.”
However, this optimism was brief. The bond market reacted to the measure as a limited remedy, causing the 10-year (^TNX) and 30-year (^TYX) Treasury yields to quickly rebound to previously higher levels. Looking ahead, investors await Bessent’s press conference scheduled for Monday, where he is expected to detail the U.S. strategy for economically isolating Iran in the latest phase of the Middle East conflict.
The geopolitical tensions remain high. Previously, President Trump threatened to impose “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” on any country that engages in trade with Iran, a warning that placed specific scrutiny on China, a major oil source from the Gulf region. Additionally, the market is anticipating key economic events next week, including the Fed’s Jackson Hole Symposium and the release of Nvidia‘s second-quarter earnings.
