Overall Market Performance
Major stock indexes reached new record highs on Tuesday, driven by anticipation surrounding negotiations in the Middle East and the flow of corporate earnings. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) led the rally, increasing by more than 2.6%. Simultaneously, the S&P 500 (^GSPC) gained 1.8%, marking another peak record. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) also climbed, adding 900 points and contributing to its own record high, building on the gains posted on Monday.
Earnings Reports Fuel Tech Rally
Investor sentiment was boosted by several significant earnings announcements throughout the day. Caterpillar (CAT), a major industrial component of the Dow, saw a rally after confirming that its sales and revenue surpassed $20 billion for the first time, benefiting from the ongoing AI industry build-out.
Palantir (PLTR) stock experienced a sharp increase of nearly 30%. According to CEO Alex Karp, the company reported an “otherworldly” quarter. Specifically, Palantir’s commercial revenue derived from the US government rose 90% year over year during the second quarter. This performance fueled a broader uptrend in chip and technology stocks, causing the PHLX Semiconductor Index (^SOX) to jump 6%. Stocks such as Nvidia (NVDA), Micron (MU), and Intel (INTC) gained considerable momentum.
Other corporations that reported earnings on Tuesday included Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), McDonald’s Corporation (MCD), and Spotify (SPOT).
Geopolitical Tensions and Labor Market Focus
In global markets, crude oil prices continued to fall. This movement occurred after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated to CNBC that there is “a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The positive outlook for the Strait of Hormuz follows mixed signals regarding Middle East diplomacy. Previously, President Trump had canceled a large-scale attack targeting Iran to restart dialogue. However, Iran disputed the claim that the two nations were engaging in talks. In a Truth Social post, Trump referred to the Islamic Republic as “unbelievably duplicitous.”
On the economic front, attention is focused on the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). This report is slated to be the most important labor market data released this week, preceding the critical July jobs report scheduled for Friday.
