Major global indices experienced declines on Monday, pressured by rising oil prices amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran. Despite ongoing geopolitical unrest, chipmakers attempted a recovery from recent losses, while experts cautioned that the semiconductor sector is undergoing a necessary reassessment.

Market Index Performance

The three principal U.S. indexes closed lower on Monday’s trading session. The S&P 500 index declined by 0.19%, settling at 7,443.28. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.05%, finishing the day at 25,508.07. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a more substantial retreat of 307.16 points, equating to a 0.59% decrease, and concluded at 51,839.26. Analysts noted that the decline in the 30-stock index was significantly influenced by Apple shares, which dropped by over 2%.

Energy Markets and Geopolitical Developments

The broader market weakness was tied to increases in oil prices following a new round of military exchanges between U.S. forces and Iran, marking the ninth consecutive day of strikes reported by the U.S. The geopolitical climate remains volatile; additionally, Houthi militants in Yemen declared an immediate maritime embargo targeting Saudi Arabia.

In energy futures, U.S. crude oil prices rose 0.9%, closing at $83.23 per barrel, while international benchmark Brent settled up approximately 1.3% at $89.22. Although President Donald Trump made statements suggesting severe consequences for Iran regarding the deaths of three U.S. service members, a degree of optimism surfaced mid-morning in London. This sentiment improved after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei indicated that messages were still being exchanged with Iran through intermediaries, suggesting potential negotiations could be pursued based on national interests.

Semiconductor and Technology Trends

The technology sector saw chip manufacturers attempting to recoup losses sustained the previous week. Micron Technology led this recovery effort, climbing nearly 2%, while Astera Labs increased by 1.9%, Teradyne rose by 3.5%, and Advanced Micro Devices added 1.6%. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) also registered a marginal gain.

Darrell Cronk, president of the Wells Fargo Investment Institute and chief investment officer for Wealth and Investment Management, characterized the current period as the semiconductor and AI trade undergoing a “healthy reality check.” He cautioned that recent signs of technical deterioration increase the likelihood of a deeper decline toward longer-term support levels, specifically referencing the 200-day moving averages. While acknowledging that a short-term rebound might be plausible given oversold conditions, Cronk emphasized that the intermediate-term uptrend had been interrupted.
