Market Performance and Inflation Concerns

Stock market indices saw declines on Wednesday, driven by investors digesting hotter-than-anticipated inflation data and the continuous release of corporate earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) dropped by 0.1%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 1%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) experienced the steepest decline, losing 1.9%.

The negative market sentiment was fueled by the release of the September Consumer Price Index (CPI), which recorded a year-over-year increase of 3.7%, surpassing the 3.6% figure that economists had projected. This inflation data, which was reportedly driven up by higher costs for gas and energy, increased the possibility that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates at its next policy meeting.

Sector and Corporate Developments

Technology stocks faced significant selling pressure. Chip equipment manufacturer ASML (ASML) reported record third-quarter sales and subsequently raised its full-year financial outlook, amidst sustained strong demand from the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Investors are now keenly awaiting earnings reports from Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) on Thursday for further confirmation regarding the state of the AI boom.

In the financial sector, major banks concluded their third-quarter reporting. BlackRock (BLK) shares appreciated after their third-quarter earnings surpassed analyst expectations. Conversely, Bank of America (BAC) stock dropped significantly, partially due to a $1.2 billion regulatory penalty that impacted its earnings. Meanwhile, the global benchmark, Brent crude futures (BZ=F), maintained a price above $105 per barrel, a trend attributed to ongoing attacks by the Houthis on Saudi Arabian energy facilities.

Regulatory and Industry Concerns

Multiple regulatory and policy announcements added layers of concern to the markets. The Comptroller of the Currency reported that nine of the nation’s largest banks reportedly denied financial services to customers based on their political, religious, or social beliefs, according to a regulatory review released Wednesday.

The Comptroller of the Currency said nine of the nation’s largest banks denied financial services to customers based on their political, religious, or social beliefs, according to a regulatory review released Wednesday. The OCC reviewed nearly 100,000 complaints and received approximately 50,000 documents from JPMorgan Chase Bank, Bank of America, Citibank, Wells Fargo Bank, U.S. Bank, Capital One, PNC Bank, TD Bank, and BMO Bank regarding their policies, procedures, practices, and individual customer decisions. The federal banking watchdog determined that the banks’ sweeping internal guidelines lacked objective, risk-based criteria, effectively shutting out legitimate customers and businesses based on ideological leanings rather than financial risk.Federal regulators found that lenders restricted certain sectors’ access to financial services, including oil and gas exploration; coal mining; firearms or ammunition manufacturing or distribution; construction or operation of detention facilities; and the manufacturing, distribution or online retail of tobacco or e-cigarettes.

In a separate development regarding AI safety, Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang stated that his company might potentially restrict the purchase of its chips from developers if those developers were creating unsafe AI. Huang added, “It’s a hypothetical, but yes,” telling Bloomberg, “But before you do so, you would have a conversation. We don’t run other people’s companies, and there’s a limit to the judgment we apply to other companies’ use of our technology. Our technology is general-purpose.”

Broader Economic and Energy Signals

Energy costs remained high, with gas prices reaching a milestone of 158 days remaining above $4, according to a GasBuddy analysis, setting a new record.

Looking at the broader economic picture, the Federal Reserve’s position was scrutinized, with one Federal Reserve official suggesting that while one more rate hike might be suitable this year, further tightening would not be necessary in 2027, which improved sentiment for gold, which typically performs better in lower rate environments.

Furthermore, a major industrial deal was announced: GlobalFoundries plans to construct two semiconductor production factories in Malta, New York. This project, announced alongside the Department of Commerce, will receive $21 billion in funding from Japan as part of a larger trade agreement involving Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The first facility is projected to become operational in 2029.

Regarding investment strategy, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink compared the potential financing market for AI chips to the historical rise of mortgage-backed securities in the 1980s, stating:

“In the early 1980s, mortgages were loans sitting on bank’s balance sheets,
[ illiquid ] and hard to price. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began cooling them, but that alone didn’t make them tradable. What made them tradable was data, years of performance history and understanding of how the performance would move with interest rates and with the changes of the broader economy. Once investors had a trusted time series of data, issuers had a standard to build against and the market opened up for a much bigger group of investors. That combination took the MBS market from a few billion dollars when I started to the trillions of dollars it is today,” Fink said.”Compute capacity is now following a similar path, and we intend at BlackRock to be the center of it as we were then in the beginnings of the mortgage-backed securities market,” Fink said.
