Perplexity has officially launched Personal Computer, a major expansion of its existing Perplexity Computer offering designed specifically for macOS users. This new application allows the AI tool to integrate deeply with the local file system and native applications running on a Mac machine. While Personal Computer was initially announced in March and offered via a waitlist, it is now fully available starting today, April 16, 2026, exclusively for Perplexity Max subscribers.
Core Capabilities and Operation
Perplexity Computer functions as an all-in-one “digital worker” capable of creating and executing comprehensive workflows. With this latest update, the tool can run directly on a Mac while accessing the user’s files and native software. Users activate Personal Computer by simultaneously pressing both Command keys on their Mac. The system responds to either voice or text commands and maintains visibility into active applications, automatically presenting quick actions for immediate use.
The AI agent possesses advanced capabilities, including the ability to sort disorganized downloads folders, complete items on a user’s to-do list, and compare files stored locally against real-time information found across the web. Furthermore, Personal Computer can coordinate teams of specialized agents, utilizing over 20 frontier models to achieve complex tasks. All actions taken by Personal Computer are transparent, allowing users to monitor its progress and intervene if necessary.
System Requirements and Data Integrity
Personal Computer for Mac is compatible with any computer running macOS 14 Sonoma or a newer version. However, the company strongly recommends using a Mac mini. By utilizing a Mac mini, users can enable Personal Computer to operate continuously (24/7), which is ideal for tasks requiring persistent machine uptime or secure local access to sensitive files and native apps. Users can also initiate and monitor these tasks remotely using an iPhone.
Security features are paramount in the design of Personal Computer. All data interactions occur within a secure sandbox, ensuring that actions taken by the AI are fully auditable and reversible. The application also includes a dedicated kill switch for user control. Access to this new feature is limited to Perplexity Max subscribers, which is priced at $200 per month; it is not available to those on the standard Pro plan at $20 per month.
