Industry experts are noting that the high cost of professional-grade hardware continues to escalate, with NVIDIA setting a new high price point for its top-tier workstation graphics card. According to an update on NVIDIA’s marketplace, the flagship RTX PRO 6000 “Blackwell” GPU is currently retailing for $16,000.
GPU Specifications and Market Pricing
The high cost places the RTX PRO 6000 “Blackwell” as the most expensive GPU offered by the company outside of its dedicated server solutions, such as the B200/B300, which utilize the SXM form factor. Despite featuring 24,064 CUDA cores and 96 GB of GDDR7 memory, the current retail price is reportedly astonishing, reflecting broader market pressures and memory shortages impacting GPU pricing.
This highly complex component is built with 32 GDDR7 memory modules: 16 modules situated on the front side of the PCB, and 16 modules on the back, effectively sandwiching the board. Each of these modules holds a 3 GB capacity.
Component Costs and Price Increases
The cost of the raw materials alone contributes significantly to the final price. Back in late July, each 3 GB GDDR7 module cost approximately $60 to $70, meaning the total cost for the GDDR7 memory alone ranged between $1,920 and $2,240. Because the final SKU utilizes 32 modules, any fluctuation in the supply chain costs for this core component is dramatically multiplied.
While the final $16,000 price accounts for numerous other component costs, including MLCCs, the steep increase compared to previous pricing tiers is notable. NVIDIA originally launched this specific GPU SKU with an MSRP of $8,565. This price increased in June to $13,250. Just two months later, the current price represents an increase of roughly 87% above the original MSRP. Analysts suggest that if pricing does not stabilize, a full 100% increase could occur, potentially pushing the GPU’s cost above $17,000.
However, it is noted that while the pricing remains high, the impact of these costs is considered much lower for professional workstation users compared to the consumer gaming market.
