As the PC market faces increased pressure from rising component costs, Microsoft is raising prices across its Surface laptop lineup. In stark contrast, Apple has introduced a more affordable productivity option—the MacBook Neo—which is undercutting expensive alternatives while delivering competitive performance.

The Rising Cost of Traditional PCs

Microsoft recently adjusted the pricing of its Surface devices. This increase comes amid broader industry trends where PC manufacturers are grappling with soaring expenses for critical components, including memory, storage drives, and Intel processors.

Analyst insights suggest that Apple’s ability to maintain lower prices is rooted in its highly integrated design model. Unlike Microsoft or other PC makers who rely heavily on third-party parts, Apple controls a larger portion of the production pipeline, from chip creation to hardware assembly. This control provides them with significant cost management and pricing flexibility.

MacBook Neo Offers High Performance at Lower Cost

Apple’s new MacBook Neo is priced at $599. Analysts suggest that viewing the Neo as a premium version of a higher-end Chromebook system makes more sense than comparing it directly to high-tier Surfaces, whose median price hovers around $1,500.

“It’s pretty easy to see how Apple hit the lower price point,” stated Dean McCarron, an analyst at Mercury Research. He noted that while Chromebook prices are also increasing, a typical Intel N100/N150 based system averages around $370, and upgrading components can bring performance close to what the Neo offers.

The MacBook Neo utilizes the A18 Pro processor. In benchmarks conducted by CPU-Monkey.com, this chip achieved a Geekbench 6 score of 3,574. This figure is more than three times faster than the N150’s score of 1,125 and surpasses the single-core Geekbench score of 2,908 posted by the Core Ultra X9 388H (Panther Lake).

Vertical Integration Provides a Competitive Edge

The ability for Apple to achieve these lower costs is attributed largely to its vertical integration strategy. By designing and commissioning the A18 Pro chip itself, Apple can minimize individual silicon expenses.

“Apple controls basically the entire vertical stack, so they have a little bit more flexibility,” commented Jim McGregor, an analyst at Tirias Research. He added that this control over the complete product ecosystem grants Apple greater pricing influence compared to its industry rivals.

In contrast, Microsoft functions like most other PC manufacturers: it integrates components supplied by external vendors. While Microsoft briefly codeveloped the SQ3 chip with Qualcomm for the Surface Pro 9 (5G) in 2022, that specialized model is no longer representative of its current strategy. Consequently, Microsoft must negotiate component pricing as a standard third-party assembler and may be experiencing similar cost pressures to other major PC makers.

Furthermore, some speculation suggests that Apple might incorporate “binned” or previously rejected A18 Pro chips into the Neo, potentially reducing manufacturing costs even further.
