Overview of New Desktop Computing Models
Apple announced updates to its Mac Mini and Mac Studio product lines, introducing enhanced chips and features specifically designed to bolster artificial intelligence (AI) applications. According to the company, these new models solidify the importance of desktop computers as a critical platform for Apple in the growing field of AI development, serving as both a showcase for chip capabilities and a key development tool.
Mac Mini Upgrades and Pricing Adjustments
The Mac Mini is now available with two new processor options: the M6 chip and the M5 Pro chip. The M6 chip marks the first time Apple has utilized this generation, which is manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. on a 2-nanometer process. The Mac Mini’s starting price has increased to $899, reflecting a $100 rise from the previous model’s starting price.
Performance enhancements are significant across the lineup. The M5 Pro configuration, for example, is reported to process large language model prompts at a speed 8.5 times faster than earlier Pro versions of the Mac Mini. Previously, the device offered configurations using M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips.
High-Performance Mac Studio Capabilities
The Mac Studio remains Apple’s most powerful desktop offering that does not incorporate a built-in display (following the discontinuation of the Mac Pro earlier this year). The updated models include the M5 Max and the M5 Ultra chips.
The M5 Max chip is expected to allow large language models (LLMs) to function nearly four times faster compared to its predecessor. Furthermore, the M5 Ultra chip, Apple’s most powerful offering, enables multiple Mac Studios to be linked together. This setup allows the machines to collectively pool memory and run complex, trillion-parameter frontier AI models.
Pricing for the high-end units is set as follows: a Mac Studio equipped with the M5 Max starts at $2,499, matching its prior cost. A Mac Studio featuring the M5 Ultra begins at $5,499, which is an increase from the minimum price of $5,299 previously charged for an Ultra chip model.
Technical Advancements for AI Development
For developers, the new hardware focuses on local AI processing. Developers utilizing tools such as OpenClaw often prefer running their proprietary AI agents on a dedicated Mac Mini rather than relying on cloud services. Similarly, the Mac Studio is a preferred choice among AI researchers for experimenting with local model training and deployment.
Apple highlighted that its processors, both for iPhones and Macs, incorporate specialized components called neural engines dedicated to running AI models. Additionally, the architecture utilizes a RAM structure designed to eliminate certain memory bottlenecks. In their press release, Apple stated that these new chips and frameworks enable developers to run and fine-tune large AI models locally on their Mac.
The new Mac Mini and Mac Studio models are scheduled for presale on Tuesday and are slated to ship on September 22.
