Discontinuation of the Honda Prologue
Honda has announced that it will discontinue sales of the Honda Prologue electric vehicle (EV) in the United States. Although the Prologue remains one of America’s top ten best-selling EVs, its production run is concluding.
Following earlier decisions to scrap plans for next-generation models—such as the 0 Series SUV and Sedan, and the Acura RSX—the discontinuation of the Prologue was widely anticipated. Unlike the scrapped 0 Series models, which were slated for a dedicated platform at Honda’s “EV Hub” in Ohio, the Prologue is built on GM’s Ultium platform, the same technology used by Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac.
This move follows the discontinuation of the Acura ZDX last year, which was also constructed using the Ultium platform, leaving the Prologue as Honda’s only electric vehicle model available domestically.
Confirmation and Market Performance
While initial reports regarding the end of the model were based on speculation, a company spokesperson confirmed the decision to report CarBuzz on Thursday. The representative stated that “Honda will conclude sales of Prologue later this year following completion of the 2026 model year.”
The spokesperson added reassurance to current owners: “Current Prologue drivers will continue to receive full support through our dealer network, including service, parts, and warranty coverage.”
Since going on sale in March 2024, the Honda Prologue quickly gained popularity, at one point ranking among America’s most sought-after EVs alongside competitors like the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. During its first full sales year, the vehicle ranked sixth in US EV sales. Even as sales declined by 48% year-over-year, it maintained an eighth-place rank during the first half of 2026.
Strategic Shift to Hybrid Technology
The decision signals a significant pivot in Honda’s strategy regarding electrification. Although the company sold over 80,000 Prologues in just over two years, the immediate removal of its EV line leaves Honda with no all-electric vehicles or associated production infrastructure within the US.
Instead, Honda is redirecting its focus toward hybrid technology. The automaker plans to launch a total of 15 new global hybrid models by 2030. Within North America, these efforts will involve introducing larger hybrid options in the D-segment class or above. Furthermore, the “EV Hub” facility located in Ohio will be repurposed to manufacture both hybrid and traditional gasoline vehicles.
Financial Implications
The financial cost of this strategic contraction has been quantified by Honda. The company estimates that scaling back its EV plans will total 2.5 trillion yen ($15.7 billion), with most of these costs expected in the upcoming fiscal year.
Reviewing past performance, for the fiscal year ended March 2026, Honda recorded EV-related losses amounting to 1.45 trillion yen ($9.2 billion). Total operating losses for that period stood at 414.3 billion yen ($2.6 billion), marking a record low.
