Genesis, the luxury brand associated with Hyundai, has recently showcased its first full-size, three-row electric SUV intended for the United States market, the GV90. The vehicle has generated significant attention due to its highly advanced and unique design elements and features within the current automotive industry.
Revolutionary Coach-Style Doors and Safety Innovations
One of the most striking characteristics of the GV90 is its coach-style door design. When both the front and rear doors open outward, the vehicle’s B-pillar is effectively removed, creating an exceptionally wide opening. Genesis refers to this feature as the Neolun Arch Gate, which the company claims is the world’s first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach door.
The B-pillar is traditionally a vital safety component, providing structural support against roof collapses during a rollover and absorbing crash energy during a side impact (T-bone collision). Genesis addressed the removal of this pillar by implementing a new structure, which the company asserts “seamlessly marries the doors to the vehicle body while maintaining the highest safety standards.” This system replaces the pillar with “high-strength dual steel beams” chosen for their rigidity, which join the doors and body and “effectively disperses collision forces.”
A concealed yet robust roll cage is created by reinforcing the passenger cabin with a frame 1.5 times thicker than conventional vehicles and fortifying it with integrated high-strength steel tubes and structural foam. This hidden roll cage structure protects occupants while achieving crash safety performance equivalent to vehicles with conventional B-pillars.
The effectiveness of this new architecture will depend on regulatory bodies and third-party testing groups. If the GV90 successfully passes rigorous crash testing, it could establish a new benchmark for possible vehicle designs.
Advanced Interior and Passenger Experience
Beyond the doors, the GV90 incorporates several futuristic cabin features. The front seats are capable of rotating 180 degrees, allowing occupants to face the second row and creating an environment reminiscent of a lounge or stagecoach. This feature, originally common in designs for autonomous vehicles, is intended for use only when the vehicle is parked.
The interior technology suite includes a 23.6-inch OLED Cinematic Display, which can rise 90 millimeters and expand into a 24.6-inch screen. Additionally, a 25-inch heads-up display has been implemented to replace the traditional instrument cluster, providing real-time details on speed, navigation, and driver assistance levels.
The vehicle also features Memory Reversing Assist, an advanced driver aid that tracks the vehicle’s path and can automatically guide it backward when exiting confined spaces or parking areas.
Performance Specifications and Luxury Amenities
In terms of powertrain, the GV90 is equipped with a 123.5kWh battery and operates at 800 nominal volts, managed by a wireless battery management system. Power is distributed through two electric drive units, each featuring its own electronically controlled limited-slip differential. This setup delivers a combined power output of 657 horsepower and 590lb-ft of torque.
The SUV supports 350kW DC fast charging, with an estimated operational range of 310 miles. Complementing the performance figures is an array of luxurious and safety-oriented amenities, including heated floors, heated armrests, side panels, and door trims. For passenger comfort, the seats feature massaging capabilities utilizing 15 individual air bladders. The vehicle also includes a heated windshield, which uses a thin metallic coating to prevent winter frost without relying solely on the climate control system. Furthermore, the GV90 is equipped with a roof airbag designed to cover the entire glass roof and protect occupants in the event of a rollover.
