A manufacturing site jointly operated by General Motors and LG Energy Solution in northeast Ohio is set to restart the production of battery cells next week, following a seven-month period of inactivity.
Ohio Plant Revival and Workforce Status
The restart of operations at the Ultium Cells joint venture plant in Ohio is expected to bring the majority of previously laid-off workers back to the facility, according to Tom Gallagher, the vice president of operations for Ultium. These efforts mean that a total of 1,400 employees will be working at the plant.
The facility had ceased manufacturing battery cells in January due to a noticeable decline in consumer demand for electric vehicles.
Status of Other Joint Venture Sites
The operational status of GM’s other joint venture sites was also noted. The second GM and LG JV plant, located in Tennessee, has shifted its focus, now manufacturing batteries for energy storage systems rather than dedicated EV batteries.
Furthermore, earlier this week, Samsung SDI acquired General Motors’ stake in the joint venture that was established to produce EV battery cells at an under-construction facility in Indiana.
