Genesis GV90: A New Era for Hyundai Luxury
Hyundai Motor Group has introduced the Genesis GV90, an all-electric, large SUV positioned as the brand’s newest luxury flagship vehicle. This vehicle represents a significant design evolution for Genesis and expands the luxury brand’s U.S. lineup to a total of seven models, supporting Hyundai’s ongoing domestic sales growth.
The GV90 is notable because it is the largest vehicle the brand has offered in the U.S. market since its arrival a decade ago. In the competitive large SUV segment, the GV90 is expected to challenge established rivals such as the Cadillac Vistiq and Escalade IQ, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and the Rivian R1S.
Hyundai CEO José Muñoz commented on the launch, stating, “Today marks a landmark arrival for Genesis and for the future of luxury mobility. GV90 opens a new chapter for Genesis, building on our track record of bold innovation, elevated customer experiences, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Performance and Design Features
The GV90 will be the first full-size SUV offered by the luxury brand. Powering the vehicle is a new high-performance electric motor system capable of generating up to 490 kilowatts (approximately 660 horsepower) and 800 Newton-meters (590 foot-pounds) of torque. The company estimates the electric vehicle (EV) range to be around 310 miles.
The vehicle’s exterior design features a distinct dual light signature that converges at a central point, a styling element previously presented by the brand as a concept car in 2024. The GV90 will be produced at a newly established Hyundai facility located in Ulsan, South Korea.
Trims, Doors, and Market Context
The GV90 is slated to become available for sale in the United States in early next year. While the company has not yet released pricing details, they confirmed that the vehicle will be available in multiple versions. These include the GV90 Neolun, which features coach doors that open from the center, and standard GV90 trims equipped with conventional swing doors. Additionally, a premium “First Edition” model will be available, featuring special badging and plush materials such as wool cashmere.
The coach doors, often called “suicide doors,” are known for making entry and exit easier, though they pose structural challenges regarding safety. Genesis addressed this by engineering a novel structure that seamlessly integrates the doors with the car body while maintaining the highest safety standards, even in the absence of a middle pillar.
The automaker declined to confirm if the GV90 would also be offered in hybrid or traditional gasoline variants, a flexibility utilized by other Genesis models like the GV70 SUV and the G80 sedan. Market context remains relevant, as the U.S. EV sales market has seen a slowdown due to the discontinuation of federal subsidies, including the ability to receive up to $7,500 for EV purchases, by the Trump administration.
On a positive note regarding sales performance, Genesis recorded approximately 39,088 units sold in the U.S. during the first six months of the current year, representing a roughly 5% increase compared to the same period last year. The brand has maintained a run of 22 consecutive months of year-over-year sales growth.
