NEW YORK — May 1, 2026 — Investment firm Coatue is expanding its artificial intelligence portfolio beyond equity holdings by entering the physical infrastructure market. The firm has established a dedicated initiative called Next Frontier, which will focus on purchasing parcels of land situated near major electrical grids to develop future data center facilities.

Strategic Expansion into Physical Infrastructure

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, this new venture aims to generate higher returns by positioning Coatue closer to the foundational layers of the AI boom. The firm already holds significant investments in prominent artificial intelligence developers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, alongside infrastructure providers CoreWeave and Singapore-based DayOne. Representatives for Coatue have not yet provided an official statement regarding the initiative.

Partnership and Market Context

As part of its infrastructure push, Next Frontier has reportedly entered a joint venture with Fluidstack, a cloud infrastructure startup. This collaboration supports Fluidstack’s recently announced $50 billion commitment to construct data center facilities specifically for Anthropic. The broader push for AI hardware is accelerating across the United States. Data from Pew Research indicates that the nation currently operates approximately 3,000 data centers, with more than 1,500 additional facilities currently in various stages of construction. A majority of these new projects are being developed in rural communities. This rapid expansion has sparked intense land speculation and attracted substantial capital from a wide range of investors, including real estate giant Blackstone and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary.
