As artificial intelligence advances toward “agentic” capabilities—where systems can perform complex reasoning tasks before acting—the demand for powerful central processing units (CPUs) within data centers is projected to grow exponentially. While graphics processing units (GPUs) provide immense raw computing power, CPUs are crucial because they manage the sequential thought process necessary for AI agents. Consequently, industry expectations suggest that the ratio of GPUs to CPUs will shift dramatically: declining from an 8-to-1 ratio used in training models, down to a 4-to-1 ratio during inference, and eventually reaching parity at 1-to-1 for fully autonomous AI agents.

This forecast places Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Arm Holdings, and Intel in a prime position to benefit from the growth. Previously, Arm projected that the data center CPU market would reach $100 billion over five years, aiming to secure a 15% market share. This projection suggested reaching $25 billion in revenue by 2031, with an estimated $15 billion sourced specifically from CPUs. Nevertheless, the company faces potential headwinds: high memory costs are anticipated to increase smartphone prices, which could slow consumer demand. Additionally, securing sufficient manufacturing capacity is expected to constrain its near-term CPU growth, while its new role presents a risk of competing against its own major customers.
