OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a novel smart speaker designed to function as an advanced, movable AI companion. This device aims to establish a new category of home computer for the emerging era of artificial intelligence.
Product Concept and Advanced Functionality
The forthcoming product, which is still in development, is envisioned as a sophisticated household assistant capable of interacting with users on a seemingly human level. Its core function will extend beyond typical smart speakers; it will manage home appliances, provide media playback, answer queries, and handle messages, leveraging the extensive capabilities offered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
A key differentiator for the device is its intended personality and ability to build a deep connection with its owner. It incorporates mechanical moving parts to give it a dynamic presence that goes beyond merely responding to commands. Furthermore, the system will analyze personal data, such as emails, to develop a deeper understanding of the user’s life. OpenAI plans for this technology to become increasingly proactive, anticipating needs and surfacing information before being asked.
The device’s communication abilities are slated to rely on an enhanced version of ChatGPT Voice Mode, known as GPT-Live, which was rolled out in July 2026. This updated mode is designed for natural conversation flow, allowing the system to listen and speak simultaneously while quickly processing complex information.
Development Strategy and Legal Challenges
The move into hardware represents a significant strategic leap for OpenAI, especially as the company anticipates an initial public offering in the near future. The initiative has been supported by major acquisitions; last year, OpenAI spent US$6.5 billion to acquire io Products, a startup co-founded by design veteran Jony Ive. Ive’s studio, LoveFrom, is also collaborating on this new product line.
In addition to the design expertise, OpenAI has bolstered its team with former Apple employees and designers responsible for products like the iPhone and Mac. Key personnel involved include Tang Tan, a co-founder of io Products and former head of iPhone product design, and Evans Hankey, who previously led industrial design at Apple. Paul Meade, a senior executive from Apple who managed the development of the Vision Pro headset, was also recently hired by the company.
The device is designed to be portable, featuring a rechargeable battery that allows users to move it throughout the house—whether in the laundry room for chores or the kitchen for cooking assistance. It also includes a camera and various sensors, enabling it to interpret the user’s surroundings and context, distinguishing it from conventional smart speakers.
Competition and Market Timeline
The push into consumer tech intensifies competition with industry leaders like Apple, Amazon.com, and Google’s Alphabet. The effort has been met with legal scrutiny, notably an accusation of trade secret theft filed by Apple last week. Despite the lawsuit—in which OpenAI chief hardware officer Tang Tan was accused of obtaining confidential information about Apple’s future products—OpenAI maintains that its device is significantly different from any current Apple offering and does not violate proprietary secrets.
While Apple sells smart speakers like the HomePod, OpenAI asserts that its new product’s audio systems and hardware are substantially distinct. The company stated that it has “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets,” adding that it believes in “fair competition.”
OpenAI plans to unveil this speaker device sometime this year, with a potential release date set for 2027, though the timeline remains subject to legal developments. Looking ahead, OpenAI also intends to develop a mobile AI unit capable of replacing the smartphone, as well as wearable items like pendants and home robotics.
Competitors are actively preparing their own responses; Apple is developing a smart-home command center, code-named J490. This device will feature a square 7-inch display, facial recognition capabilities, and videoconferencing abilities, showcasing the new Siri AI assistant which is part of the forthcoming iOS 27 operating system.
