In a move signaling growing industry focus on resource efficiency, Nvidia has invested in Simplismart, an Indian firm specializing in making AI model deployment less resource-intensive. The company secured $14 million in an all-primary Series B funding round, positioning itself to help businesses operate complex AI models using fewer graphics processing units (GPUs).
Funding and Valuation
The Series B investment was made by Nvidia, alongside participation from Accel, Shastra VC, and Micromax. Dallas Venture Capital led the funding round. Following the capital infusion, the four-year-old company was valued at approximately $100 million.
Amritanshu Jain, co-founder and CEO of Simplismart, noted that the primary challenge for companies today is not necessarily finding the absolute fastest or cheapest inference method. Instead, businesses require an efficient balance of speed and cost tailored to their specific operational needs.
Optimizing AI Infrastructure
The operational deployment of AI models often presents significant hurdles for businesses, requiring complex adjustments to meet varied business needs. Simplismart’s software addresses this by automating much of the necessary configuration work. The platform adjusts how AI models run on existing computing infrastructure, relieving customers from the need to manage these complex settings manually.
The company’s software acts as an intermediary layer between the AI models and the underlying computing hardware. It optimizes several critical factors, including the speed of model response, the volume of requests handled, and the overall computing power consumption, thereby helping companies maximize the output from their current GPU infrastructure.
Operational Scope and Growth
Simplismart, which is based in Bengaluru, offers companies flexible ways to run and deploy AI models. These options include using Simplismart’s proprietary platform or integrating the service within the customer’s own existing cloud or on-premises setups. Furthermore, the tool provides essential capabilities such as model fine-tuning, automatic resource scaling based on fluctuating demand, and performance monitoring.
The company also enables cloud service providers to build and operate their own AI inference services on GPU infrastructure through Simplismart’s technology. Notable industry applications include helping the AI video-generation platform InVideo reduce its GPU serving costs by 56%. Simplismart also collaborates with other companies, including AI video firms HeyGen and Higgsfield, and enterprise AI startup Ema. Additionally, the Indian cloud provider Yotta utilizes Simplismart’s technology for its serverless AI inference service within the Shakti Studio platform.
Jain stated that the startup’s annualized revenue run rate experienced a 14-fold growth over the preceding six months, reaching an eight-figure sum. This figure, which reflects recent customer usage rather than contracted recurring revenue, excludes revenue passed through to infrastructure providers.
Although the company has a larger customer base within India, Jain pointed out that over half of Simplismart’s revenue originates from the U.S. market.
Nvidia Collaboration and Market Strategy
In addition to the investment, Nvidia has begun technical integrations with Simplismart. These collaborations focus on areas like Nvidia’s Dynamo inference software and involve working together between Simplismart’s engineers and Nvidia’s solutions architects. Furthermore, Nvidia has assisted the startup by introducing it to potential partners and clients.
While it appears paradoxical for the dominant AI chip supplier, Nvidia, to back a software solution designed to reduce GPU usage, Jain argued that improving AI inference efficiency ultimately benefits Nvidia. This increased efficiency makes the hardware more appealing and stimulates broader adoption of AI applications.
Simplismart operates in a highly competitive market for AI inference software, facing competition from major cloud providers and hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, as well as from Nvidia itself and numerous emerging startups. Jain highlighted that the company’s competitive advantage lies in its ability to cater to customers with stringent requirements regarding Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Unlike competitors offering predetermined performance tiers, Simplismart aims to provide a balanced, customized solution for every client.
The company was established in 2022 by Amritanshu Jain, a former Oracle engineer, and Devansh Ghatak, a former Google engineer. The two co-founders met while studying at BITS Pilani, and the firm currently employs 58 people. Simplismart plans to utilize the new funding to expand its presence in the U.S., grow its team, and invest heavily in developing its core inference software.
