Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google are facing civil litigation in federal court concerning calls made by industry leaders to coordinate a slowdown in the pace of artificial intelligence development.
Allegations of Anti-Competitive Behavior
The lawsuit asserts that remarks suggesting the necessity of “pacing the frontier” of AI advancement constitute an illegal collaborative agreement among competing companies. The complaint centers on public statements made by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who advocated earlier this month for “industry-wide coordination” to manage the speed of AI progress. This plea reportedly received endorsements from other key figures, including SpaceXAI head Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis.
Filing the suit in the Northern District Court of California, one of the attorneys involved, Nick Rowley, stated that the action was initiated to prevent “private self-serving agreements between the world’s most powerful ‘for profit’ technology companies” from causing AI to “quickly spin[ing] out of human control.”
Rowley further emphasized the need for governmental oversight, declaring in a statement, “Humanity deserves iron clad safeguards when it comes to extinction event threats such as nuclear warfare and now the biggest risk to mankind in history. The rule of law should be established transparently and lawfully by our government, with accountability to the public.”
Plaintiffs and Legal Scope
The plaintiffs include Cheyenne Hunt, who is also a lawyer known for bringing attention to accusations of sexual misconduct against former California Representative Eric Swalwell and former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner earlier this year. Hunt is joined by Florida attorneys Charles Buist and Nick Spetsas, and California resident Christine Bullock.
In their legal filing, the plaintiffs indicated their intent to potentially expand the case into a class-action suit, representing others who may be negatively affected by any decision made by the involved companies to temper AI development.
Context of the Lawsuit
The support for slowing AI development by these industry leaders came in the wake of serious warnings issued by both current and former AI researchers. These experts had cautioned that the technology posed potentially existential risks to human survival if it were allowed to advance without the implementation of additional safety measures and guardrails.
The lawsuit alleging the illegal coordination was officially filed on Friday, September 18, 2026.
