Despite Anthropic’s current lead and OpenAI’s efforts to catch up, industry experts point out that developers are highly experimental when choosing coding tools, leading to minimal vendor lock-in. For instance, MongoDB CEO CJ Desai stated that the company uses multiple generative AI tools, including Claude Code, for different use cases, suggesting a willingness to adopt superior options regardless of existing contracts.
“For different use cases we use different things,” Desai explained. “If Gemini came up with something better, or Codex is better, then I want to be able to use that and not do a long-term commitment, right?”

Ken Parmelee, an analyst at Forrester, described this dynamic by saying, “Anytime you ask any of these tools, ‘Build this thing for me,’ they’re burning tokens… This is the new gateway drug.
