Historically, the primary narrative surrounding Nvidia focused on its GPU dominance. During the initial phases of the AI boom, the company was considered the sole provider of cutting-edge graphics processing units, leading to substantial profitability as the industry expanded. However, in recent years, the market landscape has changed considerably, with major cloud providers, including Amazon and Google, beginning to develop their proprietary silicon. This shift has led some investors to question the durability of Nvidia’s long-standing market advantage.

Market Trajectory and Evolving Strategy

While the initial story of GPU scarcity remains compelling, the reality is that Nvidia’s market position is undergoing a transformation. Despite growing its market capitalization tenfold between the start of 2023 and mid-2025, the company’s stock performance has moderated over the last year, partly due to growing concerns over increased competition in the GPU sector.

A new understanding of the company’s value proposition has emerged following recent earnings reports. Investors are recognizing that Nvidia’s influence extends far beyond its graphics processing units. As the computational demands of AI scale into the gigawatt range, managing and coordinating these massive deployments—known as orchestration—has become an increasingly complex challenge. Nvidia has positioned itself at the center of the hardware required to manage these systems, securing a significant edge in the surrounding infrastructure even as GPU competition intensifies.

The Importance of System Integration

Operating a megascale data center at peak efficiency is an extremely difficult task. As deployments become larger and faster, this challenge grows. This shift is evident in the specialized systems Nvidia is introducing, such as the Vera Rubin architecture. This setup combines the Rubin GPU with various complementary units, including the Vera CPU, the Groq 3 LPX inference accelerator, and integrated racks designed for storage and networking.

These units are highly specialized, but their function is not simply to process tokens; rather, they are designed to ensure that every component outside the GPU operates with maximum efficiency. Experts suggest that if the GPU is the primary engine, these surrounding components are the critical systems necessary for the entire vehicle to function optimally.

The Vera CPU, in particular, addresses the critical issue of data coordination. According to Jason Hardy, Nvidia’s VP of storage technology, the component is vital because,

Vera is important because there’s only so much memory that you can put in a single server or any sort of compute platform.

While the scaling of computing power has also led to massive increases in memory capacity—benefiting companies like Micron—the challenge remains how to deliver the required data to the GPU precisely when needed. As companies aim to lower their tokens-per-watt consumption, efficient data traffic management is paramount. Hardy added,

We saw upwards of 3x improvement in these operations, where the Vera CPU is allowing for acceleration. So now we can use our flash to its fullest potential, because we can get all that performance out of it without bottlenecking.

Competition in Data Management

The focus on efficient data handling is not unique to Nvidia. When OpenAI developed its Jalapeño chip, a primary goal was to overcome these data movement challenges by minimizing the amount of data that needs to be transferred. The company explained its approach in a blog post earlier this month:

We designed Jalapeño to minimize data movement and communication delays. Its large domain allows the entire workload to remain within one connected system, minimizing data movement and helping the complete request stay fast and efficient from beginning to end.

While OpenAI’s method involves keeping the entire workload contained within a single integrated chip, the underlying principle mirrors Nvidia’s focus: boosting efficiency through intelligent traffic control rather than relying solely on raw processor cycles. This emphasis on data orchestration creates an entirely new layer of infrastructure for market competition.

The Future of AI Infrastructure

This increased focus on managing and directing data flow does not guarantee an automatic victory for Nvidia. The company must now compete with rival chip manufacturers and hyperscalers, mirroring the competition it faced with GPUs. However, the battleground has shifted. The primary measure of success is less about who can manufacture the most powerful GPU and more about which company can build a cohesive and highly efficient overall system.

For now, however, the industry suggests that Nvidia maintains a considerable leadership position in this critical area of system-level infrastructure.
