Launch and Core Architecture

Moonshot AI recently introduced Kim K3.1 Pro, a sophisticated large language model (LLM) that the company claims surpasses the capabilities of competitors such as Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra. The model represents an advanced, post-trained iteration of the Kimi K3 algorithm, which was originally released by the Chinese artificial intelligence firm in July. The underlying Kimi K3 structure is composed of 896 individual neural networks and possesses 3 trillion (3T) parameters. To ensure operational efficiency and minimize inference costs, the model is designed to activate only 16 of these neural networks at any given time.

The architecture also incorporates several optimizations, including the implementation of Kimi Delta Attention. This feature is a customized application of Gated DeltaNet, a memory-saving technology designed to reduce the amount of Random Access Memory (RAM) required by the model’s attention mechanism when interpreting user prompts. Furthermore, Moonshot AI noted that the post-training process for Kimi K3.1 Pro required significantly more computing power than previous projects, utilizing an upgraded post-training stack that incorporated automated quality checks and enhanced infrastructure efficiency.

Performance Across Specialized Benchmarks

Kimi K3.1 Pro demonstrates particularly high performance in several specialized areas. In the field of 3D modeling, the LLM excels at generating geometry through code snippets, which is one of two methods for creating digital models. On the industry benchmark BenchCAD, Kimi K3.1 Pro achieved a score of 92.7%, placing it within four percentage points of both Astra and Claude Opus 5.5.

Beyond static models, the platform can also generate animations, as demonstrated by internal testing that included simulating human motion and developing multiple 3D video games—a complex task for AI models due to the massive amount of code required. In general coding ability, the model scored 65.7% on the industry standard Terminal-Bench 4.0. This score positioned it more than 7% ahead of Astra, though slightly below Opus 5.5. For complex financial tasks, Kimi K3.1 Pro outperformed both Astra and Opus 5.5 when tested on OfficeQA Pro v2, which measures an LLM’s capacity for intricate financial analysis.

Cybersecurity and Availability

In contrast to its high performance in other domains, the model’s scores on popular cybersecurity benchmarks fall behind those achieved by Astra and Opus 5.5. Moonshot AI explained that its engineers deliberately withheld cybersecurity-related data from the model’s post-training dataset to proactively mitigate potential safety risks. The company stated its intention to integrate more advanced vulnerability analysis features into future versions.

As of its release, Kimi K3.1 Pro is accessible through Moonshot AI’s paid cloud services. The company has announced plans to open-source the model’s weights by November 4.
