Nvidia has released a new GPU driver, version 621.01, which introduces support for Microsoft‘s Advanced Shader Delivery technology. This update is designed to significantly improve the speed and stability of PC gaming experiences by optimizing how games load and run.
Advanced Shader Delivery Explained
Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) is a new technology that fundamentally changes how shader compilation is handled. Instead of waiting for shaders to be compiled on the user’s local machine—a process that often causes stuttering and CPU spikes—ASD offloads this intensive compilation process to the cloud.
According to Nvidia’s Andrew Burnes, the system works by utilizing DirectX 12, Windows 11, and the Microsoft Agility SDK. Developers capture necessary shaders into a State Object Database (SODB). This allows Microsoft’s cloud network to precompile the required shaders for hundreds of thousands of potential hardware and driver combinations.
Performance Benefits and Compatibility
The primary benefit of implementing Advanced Shader Delivery is the removal of “just-in-time” shader compilation during gameplay. Burnes noted that the system boasts a near-100 percent cache hit rate, which effectively eliminates mid-game frame stutters and CPU spikes. This is expected to improve overall performance in supported titles.
The technology will allow users to bypass the noticeable shader compilation screens in titles like *Call of Duty*, and is projected to improve performance in games such as *Gears of War: E-Day* and *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4*. These specific games require downloading through the Xbox PC app to utilize the feature.
Furthermore, the system is described as “storefront-agnostic.” This means that even if a gamer purchased a game through Steam, they can still benefit from the performance improvements, provided the Xbox PC app is installed on their computer.
Availability Across Multiple Hardware Platforms
The implementation of Advanced Shader Delivery is not limited to Nvidia hardware. Users can access the feature using multiple driver updates:
- Nvidia: Requires the latest 621.01 driver update.
- AMD: Supported with Adrenalin driver versions 26.6.1 or higher.
- Qualcomm: Supported on the Snapdragon X2 series with driver version 2026.08.3 or newer.
