Paramount Pictures is reportedly developing a live-action cinematic project based on the popular video game, *Cyberpunk 2077*, which originated from CD Projekt Red‘s acclaimed action-adventure RPG.
Production Details and Key Personnel
The production is slated to feature Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is attached to serve as a producer. Di Bonaventura will be working alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish company and franchise rights holder, to bring the material to film.
The World of Cyberpunk 2077
*Cyberpunk 2077* is set in the dystopian, fictional metropolis of Night City, a cyberpunk locale located in California. The core narrative revolves around a mercenary character named V. The plot centers on V receiving a cybernetic “biochip” that contains an engram—a digital memory—belonging to the legendary rock star and terrorist, Johnny Silverhand. As Johnny Silverhand’s consciousness begins to overwrite V’s own identity, the two are forced to collaborate to save V’s life, leading them to confront the Arasaka Corporation, a powerful megacorporation that functions as the city’s governing authority.
Commercially, the game has achieved significant success, having sold upwards of 40 million copies globally. Furthermore, its expansion content, *Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty*, has sold 15 million copies.
Paramount’s Expanding Gaming Slate
This development marks a growing interest in video game adaptations at Paramount. The studio is reportedly planning several other projects stemming from gaming IP. These include a co-produced *Street Fighter* film with Legendary, which is set to debut on October 16. Additionally, Paramount is attached to a film based on the *Call of Duty* franchise, which is being directed by Peter Berg and co-written with Taylor Sheridan.
