Establishing the “Super Intelligence Force”
President Donald Trump has designated Jay Clayton, his director of national intelligence, to spearhead a new governmental task force focused on artificial intelligence. Mr. Trump refers to the initiative as the “Super Intelligence Force,” emphasizing his intent to redefine and promote AI as “super intelligence.”
According to a statement posted on social media on Sunday, the purpose of the task force is to coordinate the federal effort necessary to ensure the United States maintains global leadership in “Super Intelligence.” Trump stated that this technology is considered by many to be larger in scope than both the Industrial Revolution and the Internet. Furthermore, the group aims to safeguard American interests and improve the lives of all citizens.
Scope, Outreach, and Leadership
The new task force is mandated to engage with several key sectors, including consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, AI companies, and providers of critical infrastructure.
The group’s leadership structure will report directly to President Trump and his chief of staff, Susie Wiles. In addition to Mr. Clayton, the task force membership includes several high-profile figures: Andrew Ferguson, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission; Emil Michael, the Pentagon’s chief technology officer; and Scott Kupor, the director of the Office of Personnel Management.
Background to the Initiative
The announcement followed a recent event where President Trump hosted top executives from major AI corporations at the White House. During that meeting, the executives allegedly agreed to a voluntary pact that would enable the technology’s development to be self-regulated.
