Record-Breaking Efficiency in New Prototype
Volkswagen recently unveiled the “Mission Efficiency” prototype, an electric vehicle designed to achieve exceptionally high fuel economy. The vehicle was reported to be capable of reaching the equivalent of 323 miles per gallon under ideal driving conditions, positioning it among the most efficient cars globally.
The company conducted an extensive test run, driving the prototype from its base in Wolfsburg, Germany, over a distance of 794 miles (1,278 kilometers) to Vienna. During this journey, the team charged the vehicle only once. Upon arrival, the prototype still retained 104 miles (168 kilometers) of range, translating to a consumption rate of 7.51 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, or approximately 279 MPGe.
Design and Engineering Innovations
The Mission Efficiency prototype was constructed using components sourced from the ID. Polo, indicating that the car is considered to be in a “near production” stage. Volkswagen noted that the prototype’s efficiency metrics put it close to double the mileage of the Lucid Air Pure, which is currently cited as the most efficient production vehicle.
While the vehicle is designed for maximum efficiency, Volkswagen had to implement several design compromises. The roofline, which utilizes a shape known as a Kammback, quickly tapers after passing the driver’s head. This aerodynamic design helped reduce the coefficient of drag to 0.158, while maintaining a low frontal area of 2.08 square meters.
Other structural changes included narrowing the space between the front tires and the wheel arches. Although this improves efficiency, the modification may potentially compromise ride quality, as the wheels require adequate space within the wheel wells for shock absorption.
Features and Usability Compromises
The interior layout is technically classified as a 2+2, meaning the rear seating area is not ideal for most adult passengers. Volkswagen stated that the back seat is best suited for individuals shorter than 5-foot 3 inches (1.6 meters). Furthermore, the vehicle’s design eschewed a traditional infotainment system and built-in speakers. Instead, it is intended to pair with a portable Bluetooth speaker and assume that drivers will supply their own electronic devices.
The prototype did incorporate several thoughtful details. To preserve depth perception, the designers opted to keep traditional sideview mirrors, despite the drag they generate. Additionally, solar cells were mounted on both the roof and the trunk lid. Volkswagen calculated that these cells could add 18 miles (30 kilometers) of range when driven at a constant speed of 42.25 mph (68 kph) on perfectly level, sunny routes.
The vehicle also features a hidden storage bin located behind the rear wheel cover. The overall design ethos of the Mission Efficiency was influenced by the bare-bones aesthetic of Slate Auto’s pickup model.
Production Status and History
Although Volkswagen frequently describes the Mission Efficiency as “near production,” the company has not committed to actual manufacturing. Historically, the automaker has produced halo cars, such as the XL1, of which 250 units were manufactured over a decade ago. The XL1 was not inexpensive, with initial prices starting at €110,000 in 2013.
The Mission Efficiency prototype also does not come with an official EPA rating for its performance metrics.
