The German automaker Audi has introduced its new A2 E-tron, a compact electric crossover that is positioned as the brand’s most economical and energy-efficient electric vehicle to date. While the model features impressive technical specifications, it is important to note that the vehicle is currently restricted to the European market and is not anticipated for North American release anytime soon.
Efficiency and Performance Metrics
The A2 E-tron achieves high efficiency through several aerodynamic features, resulting in a groundbreaking drag coefficient of 0.24, a first for the Audi brand. These efficiency enhancements include flush door handles, air intakes, a fully enclosed underbody, and gap reducers around the wheel arches.
In terms of power consumption, the vehicle can achieve a range of up to 401 miles (645 km) when configured with the optimal battery and drivetrain setup, based on the European WLTP cycle. Furthermore, the A2 E-tron is reported to consume only 12.8 kWh for every 62 miles (100 km) traveled.
Advanced Technology and Interior Design
Beyond its impressive range, the A2 E-tron integrates advanced utility features. It supports bidirectional charging, which allows the car to supply power to external sources—either through a dedicated outlet in the trunk for vehicle-to-load applications, or via a compatible DC wall box for vehicle-to-home use.
The cabin is equipped with a standard curved MMI panoramic display. This display combines an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster with a 12.8-inch center touchscreen. Storage solutions are enhanced by a proprietary Fidlock magnetic fastening system, allowing owners to attach items like cup holders and charging cable bags to dedicated points throughout the interior and trunk.
Pricing and Market Availability
The compact crossover is priced affordably, beginning at £32,200, which approximates $45,000. Despite the high efficiency and low cost, the A2 E-tron is exclusively available for purchase in European markets at this time.
In a strategic shift, Audi has indicated it is maintaining flexibility in its lineup, supporting a mix of gas, hybrid, and fully electric models. Although the A2 E-tron is not immediately available alongside other notable models, such as the S6 Sportback E-tron, the automaker has stated that nothing is definitively fixed regarding future electrification plans.
