Global sales and delivery figures for China’s electric vehicle (EV) market were released for August 2026, indicating strong performance from market leaders. BYD recorded the highest sales volume with 433,384 passenger cars sold. Other notable brand performance included Geely with 175,877 units, Leapmotor reaching 103,129 units, and Xpeng selling 39,107 vehicles.
Performance of Market Leaders
BYD maintained its dominance in the volume category during August, reporting the sale of 433,384 passenger vehicles. This figure represents a 16.7% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, BYD announced that 188,746 of these units were exported. For the first half of 2026, the company generated more revenue outside of China than within its home market, with 53% of its revenue stemming from international sales. The company’s overall sales were supported by various segments: the Dynasty and Ocean series accounted for 375,373 units, while Fang Cheng Bao sold 41,568 units (a 155.6% year-on-year increase). Denza contributed 16,001 units (up 33.4% year-on-year), and Yangwang delivered 442 units (an increase of 9.1% year-on-year).
SAIC reported NEV sales totaling 187,037 units, marking a 44.1% increase year-over-year. Chery remained a major exporter, recording 196,984 units exported, which constituted 70.3% of its total 280,128 units sold. Chery’s NEV segment sold 120,909 units, showing a 69.8% rise year-over-year.
Established and Mid-Tier Manufacturers
Geely’s NEV sales for August reached 175,877 units, representing a 9.4% year-on-year increase. Within its domestic offerings, Zeekr achieved a historical high with 36,981 deliveries (a 109.8% year-on-year jump), while the Galaxy series led volume sales with 119,115 units (representing 7.6% of total sales).
Changan’s NEV division sold 105,000 units in total. This volume was comprised of 45,885 units from the Changan Qiyuan brand (an increase of 103.1% year-over-year), 28,659 units from Deepal, and 8,082 units from Avatr.
Other significant contributors included:
- Li Auto: Sold 37,679 units, a 32.1% year-over-year increase.
- Nio: Sold 35,836 units, increasing 14.5% year-over-year.
- Xiaomi: Maintained consistent sales, delivering over 30,000 units for the fifth consecutive month.
- Huawei HIMA: Reported 42,101 units sold, marking a decline of 5.6% year-over-year.
Startup and Emerging Brands
Leapmotor demonstrated strong growth, becoming the top-performing startup in August with 103,129 units delivered globally, which is an 80.7% year-over-year increase. This marks the second consecutive month the startup has surpassed the 100,000-unit monthly sales mark.
In contrast, Xpeng delivered 39,107 units, an increase of 4% year-over-year. The GX model sold 7,338 units, and the MONA series has accumulated over 310,000 cumulative deliveries.
The data confirms the competitive nature of the market, with multiple brands showing significant year-over-year growth, while others, such as Lynk & Co and Avatr, reported declines of -18.6% and -23.5%, respectively.
