One of the cleanest examples comes from personal computing. The Macintosh was presented as revolutionary, and in many ways it was. It made computers feel friendly, visual, intuitive, and almost domestic. But the idea that Apple simply invented the graphical user interface is a partial story at best and a full myth at worst.

Icons, menus, drag-and-drop, desktops — all of these were built from smaller ideas that existed before any single company made them fashionable.

So yes: the Mac was an enhancement. A powerful one. But it was also a copy of concepts already in motion. And that is how most innovation works. The last person to improve something usually gets the credit.


Punk Was Not Just Rebellion — It Was Inheritance

Nowhere is the myth of pure originality more entertaining than in music. We like to imagine that rock and roll, punk, soul, R&B, and pop all sprang fully armed from the heads of a few great artists. But music is almost always conversation, imitation, compression, and reaction.

The Beatles did not invent rock; they absorbed American R&B, soul, jazz, and pop. Elvis was a bridge between Black musical traditions and white popular audiences. That is exactly how cultural borrowing works: you take something that already exists, perfect its context, and make it feel new.

That is exactly how copy-and-enhance innovation works. You take what already exists, strip away what does not work, and place it in a new context where it suddenly feels obvious. The result may be beautiful. It may be commercially successful. It may even change behavior for millions of people. But that does not mean nobody saw the shape coming from some distance before you did.


Originality Is Mostly Presentation

Here is the bias: most “original” ideas are just better packaging of old ideas.

This applies to business, art, fashion, film, video games, architecture, and software. A startup founder will tell you about a disruptive product, but it may be an earlier app with better branding, cleaner UI, cheaper pricing, or improved distribution. Originality is not dead. But it is rarer than people claim. Most creators do not create from nothing; they create from everything before them. Every creator stands on someone else’s work, even when they do not fully realize it. Some steal openly. Others inherit quietly. Some pay tribute; some take credit. Some build better; some just build louder. But few truly start from zero.

That does not make everything fake. Enhancement is valuable. Curation is creative. Refinement can change culture. A copy done well may matter more than the original, especially if it makes an idea accessible to a new audience. The Mac did not need to be the first GUI computer to become one of the most important computers ever made. The iPod did not need to invent minimalist design to make portable music feel simple and desirable. Michael Jackson did not need to invent soul or pop to transform both.

But that also means we should stop treating innovation as pure invention. Most of it is inheritance with a better finish.


Conclusion: The Last Thief Gets the Applause

Nothing is perfectly original because culture does not work like a blank page. It works like a palimpsest — old marks show through, new ideas are layered over old ones, and every generation mistakes its favorite layer for the first one.

The myth of pure invention flatters the last person to put their name on something. The truth is simpler and humbler: we look at what exists, take pieces we want, remove pieces we don’t, polish the rest, and call it new.
