The social media platform Reddit (RDDT) achieved a significant market milestone with its inclusion in the S&P 500 index, which was set to begin trading on August 18. Following the announcement, Reddit’s stock price rose by over 15% in early trading. The company, co-founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, is positioning itself to capitalize on the artificial intelligence trend by expanding its advertising sales.

Focus on Organic Advertising Opportunities

According to Steve Huffman, the platform’s co-founder, the primary opportunity lies in leveraging the natural commercial nature of user conversations. In a recent interview with Yahoo Finance, Huffman noted that organic discussions on Reddit often revolve around purchasing decisions. He stated, “Reddit is so naturally commercial: Forty percent of the conversations people are having organically on Reddit are more or less about what to buy. They don’t say, ‘What should I buy?’ They say, ‘What should I wear? What should I watch tonight? Where should I go? What’s the best headphone?’ And so, because the organic content is naturally commercial, putting ads alongside it is also a natural thing to do.”

Strong Quarterly Financial and User Growth

The company reported robust growth figures in its second quarter. Reddit generated $805 million in revenue, marking a 61% increase year-over-year. This expansion was primarily fueled by increased advertising revenue, as advertisers utilized the platform’s extensive user communities. Furthermore, sales saw an increase exceeding 10% over the last 13 quarters, according to Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace analysis. Earnings per share also climbed substantially, rising by 178% to $1.25.

On the user side, Reddit’s global reach expanded by 18% year-over-year, reaching 130.3 million unique daily active users. This growth was largely attributable to a 28% increase in international usage and a 36% spike in the global average revenue per user (ARPU).

Analyst Perspective and Future Catalysts

Despite the strong operational metrics, Reddit’s stock is currently down 22% year-to-date, contrasting with the S&P 500, which is up 13% for the year. However, industry analysts are optimistic about the platform’s future trajectory. KeyBanc analyst Justin Patterson advised that Reddit’s focus on ad monetization and community investment should establish a sustainable business model capable of achieving over 30% annual revenue growth and aiming for a 50% EBITDA margin. Patterson further suggested that Reddit’s data is becoming increasingly valuable for Large Language Models (LLMs) and model training, identifying this as a potential upside catalyst extending into 2027. He concluded that Reddit offers a unique, asset-light way to participate in the growth of artificial intelligence.
