Production Timeline and Vehicle Platform
Ford announced that its next-generation electric vehicle, dubbed Fathom, is slated for production at the company’s Louisville Assembly Plant in the first quarter of 2027. This electric pickup truck is priced at $28,000.
The Fathom will be the inaugural vehicle built using Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. This innovative system was developed to achieve maximum aerodynamic range while simultaneously reducing overall production costs, aiming to create a profitable vehicle for the company. Ford has promoted this project internally as a transformative “Model T moment” for the 123-year-old automaker.
Major Factory Overhaul and Investment
The launch of the Fathom required a massive overhaul of the Louisville Assembly Plant, which has been converted from producing traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, such as the Escape and the Lincoln Corsair, into a dedicated EV facility. This transformation was completed in less than a year.
The renovation was extensive; due to the plant’s age, crews spent several weeks removing and hauling away vast amounts of heavy, outdated machinery, leaving only an empty shell by February. Ford is committing a total investment of $5 billion across both the Louisville factory and the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan, which is expected to generate 4,000 new jobs.
Currently, prototypes of the Fathom are being hand-built by a combination of factory workers and team members from Ford’s New Model Product Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan. These same operators will be responsible for the vehicle’s eventual mass production.
Revolutionizing the Assembly Line
The production process for the Fathom will differ significantly from traditional methods. Instead of utilizing one long conveyor belt, Ford is implementing a new “assembly tree” process. This method breaks the vehicle down into three distinct sections—the front clip, the rear clip, and the battery deck—to allow multiple operators to work on the vehicle simultaneously, improving access and workflow.
The company plans to integrate large unicasting techniques to construct the front and rear sections, replacing the need for dozens of individually stamped and welded components. Ford estimates that adopting the assembly tree process could boost production speed by up to 15 percent.
To highlight the efficiency of this new system, Ford provided an example of the software module flash station—a feature unique to a Ford assembly plant. This station ensures that every vehicle receives its most current software version before the module is installed. The source noted that previous software flashing occurred after the vehicle was completed, and if issues were found, updates required approximately 10 minutes per car. With private 5G implemented in the plant, operators can perform quality checks, such as these, as the vehicle moves through the assembly tree.
Financial Context and Market Challenges
Ford is relying on this combination of streamlined manufacturing and its core strength in high-volume vehicle production to make the $28,000 retail price for the Fathom achievable. The company has faced financial headwinds in the electric vehicle sector; records show that Ford incurred losses exceeding $5 billion from EVs and software in 2024, and another $4.8 billion in 2025. These challenges prompted the company to cancel the F-150 Lightning, a previously highly anticipated EV model.
