U.S. stock markets experienced a mixed trading day on Monday. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw gains, broad indices were cautious amid semiconductor sector volatility and geopolitical developments. Meanwhile, oil prices declined sharply following reports that U.S.-Iran hostilities had paused.

Equity Market Performance

Major indexes showed varied movements during the session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 262.83 points, marking a gain of 0.51%, and closed at 52,210.08. However, the broad-market S&P 500 added only 0.02%, settling at 7,413.18. The Nasdaq Composite index faced downward pressure, losing 0.18% and finishing at 24,932.08.

Semiconductor Sector Headwinds

The semiconductor industry was a key area of concern, with stocks generally declining despite some attempts to recover from session lows. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) notably lost more than 25 points, adding to previous losses recorded on Friday. Specific components suffered declines, including AMD, which dropped 5%, and Teradyne, which fell 4%. Micron Technology shed approximately 2%.

Market experts pointed to several factors contributing to the sector’s uncertainty. One source noted that despite chipmakers rallying earlier in the day following a significant IPO of CXMT on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, “There’s just a lot of uncertainty about what is happening with Chinese companies,” according to Thomas Martin, senior portfolio manager and partner at Globalt Investments. He added, “You have a lot of competition and technological advancement … in product markets that are very tight.”

Further pressure mounted after reports indicated that China had started developing deep ultraviolet lithography machines used for building semiconductors. This news caused U.S.-listed shares of ASML, the industry leader, to decrease by nearly 6%. Additionally, Martin observed signs of “air being let out” of the artificial intelligence bubble, noting that Communication Services and Consumer Staples were the top-performing sectors during the session.

Commodities and Macroeconomic Outlook

Oil prices experienced a sharp slump as tensions between the U.S. and Iran eased. International benchmark Brent crude futures for September delivery finished down 8.7% at $88.36 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled lower by 7.5% to $82.61 per barrel.

Globally, positive sentiment was noted in European markets. The pan-European Stoxx 600 rose 0.27% by 3:45 p.m. in London, while the German DAX gained 1.28%, and the French CAC 40 increased 0.70%. In Asia-Pacific, markets generally closed higher; for example, Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.5%, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced 1.39%.

Federal Reserve and Investment Trends

Investors remain focused on upcoming corporate earnings from major technology firms, including Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. These reports are expected to either alleviate or intensify concerns regarding expenditure in the AI sector. Regarding monetary policy, the Federal Reserve is scheduled to make its interest rate decision on Wednesday. While the prevailing consensus anticipates a hike in September, financial markets currently price in the possibility of the central bank raising its benchmark borrowing rate by a quarter percentage point as early as this week, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

In related asset classes, crypto stocks saw gains when capital rotated away from chip and AI infrastructure names. For instance, Bitmine Immersion surged 11%, while Strategy jumped 7%. Conversely, bitcoin miners lagged amidst concerns about financing and competition from Chinese semiconductor companies; Cipher Mining declined by 8%.

Analysts also weighed in on future growth potential. Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo, suggested that the artificial intelligence boom might account for around half of projected GDP growth due to data center expansion and wealth effects. Separately, Goldman Sachs downgraded Vale to neutral from buy, citing limited upside given slowing metal prices and macro tailwinds.

The U.S. dollar also weakened against European currencies as oil price drops fueled expectations of a possible pause in Federal Reserve rate hikes.
