Currently, tourism is estimated to account for 6.0 per cent of Singapore’s total exports in services in 2024. Beyond its direct financial contribution, the industry plays a crucial function in reinforcing Singapore’s global standing and connectivity. It enhances the nation’s reputation as both a premier business destination and a leisure getaway, thereby strengthening its role as a central hub for people and ideas.
Impact of the Pandemic on Visitor Arrivals
This analysis examines the recent trends and future outlook for International Visitor Arrivals (IVA) and total tourism receipts (TR). The global onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused severe disruptions to travel, prompting worldwide implementation of stringent public health measures, such as border closures. Consequently, both Singapore’s IVA and TR experienced substantial drops in 2020 and 2021.
The financial impact was significant: tourism receipts fell sharply from $27.7 billion recorded in 2019 to $4.8 billion in 2020, before continuing to contract further to $1.9 billion in 2021. Similarly, visitor numbers saw a major decrease, plummeting from 19.1 million arrivals in 2019 to approximately 2.7 million in 2020, and then dropping again to around 330,000 visitors in 2021.
Resilience and Recovery
Despite the severe downturn caused by the health crisis, both tourism receipts and international visitor arrivals demonstrated a notable rebound beginning in 2022. This recovery signifies the sector’s resilience and its ongoing importance to Singapore’s overall economic stability.
