Chris Fall, who directs the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), is stepping down from his role at the Commerce Department. The department confirmed this departure on Monday, noting that Fall’s resignation occurs approximately three months after he assumed leadership of the federal body tasked with AI testing.

Center for AI Standards and Innovation

The Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) is responsible for developing crucial capabilities related to AI evaluation and testing. Furthermore, it plays a key role in supporting standards development for advanced artificial intelligence systems. CAISI was established after the Commerce Department reorganized an entity previously known as the U.S. AI Safety Institute.

Succession Plan Confirmed

In light of Mr. Fall’s departure, Commerce spokesperson Kristen Eichamer issued a statement detailing the immediate leadership plans. She announced that Dr. Arvind Raman, the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will maintain oversight of CAISI while simultaneously serving in an acting capacity as the Acting CAISI Director.

Dr. Raman, who is noted to be a former engineering dean at Purdue University, began his tenure as NIST director on June 30.

Departmental Outlook

Commerce spokesperson Benno Kass confirmed Fall’s resignation to reporters. A Commerce official further indicated that Mr. Fall’s initial appointment had been structured as temporary. The department has stated that Dr. Raman has spent recent weeks reviewing potential candidates for the permanent leadership role.

As of now, while Dr. Raman is serving in an acting capacity, the office remains without a permanently appointed leader. This gap exists as the administration continues to deliberate on future strategies concerning AI oversight and required standards. The Commerce Department anticipates issuing an announcement regarding a new director within the coming weeks.
