Streamlined Configurations Hit the Market
As of Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Apple has systematically removed additional memory configurations from its desktop computer lineup. Shoppers can no longer order Mac mini units equipped with 32GB or 64GB of RAM. Similarly, the M3 Ultra-powered Mac Studio is being phased out of its 256GB memory tier. The M3 Ultra variant is now exclusively offered with 96GB of RAM, as Apple eliminates its higher-capacity offerings. Meanwhile, both the M3 and M4 Max Mac Studio models are currently showing delivery windows of nine to ten weeks.
Storage Adjustments and Pricing Shifts
The desktop lineup has seen further reductions in recent weeks. The standard M4 Mac mini has been restricted to 16GB and 24GB memory slots, following the removal of the 32GB variant. For the M4 Pro Mac mini, the new maximum memory capacity stands at 48GB. These memory cuts follow a storage configuration change implemented last week, which dropped the 256GB SSD option from the Mac mini lineup. With 512GB now serving as the baseline storage capacity, the entry-level price for the Mac mini increased from $599 to $799. Apple previously halted order processing for certain high-memory desktop configurations throughout March and April.
Executive Outlook and Market Drivers
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently addressed the prolonged availability challenges, noting that consumers should anticipate extended wait times. “We think, looking forward, that the Mac mini and Mac Studio may take several months to reach supply demand balance,” Cook said. According to Cook, the company did not fully anticipate the surge in consumer and professional demand for local artificial intelligence and agentic tools. To manage anticipated increases in memory component costs, Apple is strategically reducing configuration options to preserve its chip inventory. The broader semiconductor market has been strained by competing requirements from AI data centers, which have driven up memory chip prices and exacerbated the global shortage.
