BYD has officially introduced the Seal 08, a new flagship electric sedan, during the Beijing Auto Show. The vehicle showcases the automaker’s second-generation Blade Battery technology, promising a CLTC-rated range exceeding 1,000 kilometers alongside megawatt-class flash charging capabilities.
Advanced Battery and Charging Architecture
Built on an 800-volt high-voltage architecture, the Seal 08 utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry for its updated powertrain. First revealed in March, the Blade Battery 2.0 system aims to deliver more than 1,000 kilometers of range under CLTC testing standards, effectively doubling the capacity of its predecessor. The most notable innovation is its flash charging feature, which BYD states can add 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes. The system can also move the battery from 10% to 70% charge within the same five-minute window. Even in extreme conditions down to -30°C, the battery can charge from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes. This technology joins a growing industry push for rapid charging, with competitors like CATL recently introducing LFP cells capable of a full six-minute recharge.
Performance, Dimensions, and Chassis Technology
Regulatory documents confirm that the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version of the Seal 08 delivers a combined 510 kW (684 hp), split between a 190 kW front motor and a 320 kW rear motor. Buyers can also opt for rear-wheel-drive configurations rated at 255 kW or 320 kW. Measuring 5,150 mm in length with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, the sedan occupies the full-size segment and weighs 2,040 kg. It has a top speed of 240 km/h. The undercarriage incorporates rear-wheel steering to improve low-speed agility, along with BYD’s DiSus-A intelligent body control system featuring dual-chamber air suspension. An exterior LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof enables the God’s Eye B (DiPilot 300) advanced driver-assistance system.
Market Positioning and Pricing
The Seal 08’s advertised 1,000+ kilometer CLTC range equates to approximately 620 miles, though independent EPA or WLTP testing would likely yield lower numbers. For comparison, the updated Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ achieves 926 kilometers under WLTP standards with an 118 kWh battery and 800V architecture, while the EQS 580 4Matic offers 536 hp and carries a starting price above $130,200. The Seal 08’s AWD variant exceeds that horsepower output while targeting a significantly lower price point. Estimated costs place the vehicle between RMB 300,000 and RMB 350,000, or roughly $42,000 to $49,000 USD. BYD has not finalized pricing or confirmed overseas release dates, but a European introduction appears probable given the company’s recent regional expansion efforts.
Availability and Strategic Context
The Seal 08 will arrive in the Chinese market during the second quarter of 2026. It serves as the sedan counterpart to the recently unveiled Sealion 08 SUV, forming the core of BYD’s Ocean 8 Series dual-flagship strategy. The model highlights the automaker’s ability to distribute advanced battery research and development costs across a vast portfolio, allowing it to offer cutting-edge specifications at highly competitive price points. With annual sales surpassing 4 million vehicles last year and projections pointing to substantial growth in 2026, BYD’s vertical integration and manufacturing scale continue to reshape global electric vehicle market dynamics.
