Amazon has entered a major strategic agreement that significantly impacts satellite communications and future Apple devices. The company is acquiring Globalstar, the existing satellite provider responsible for powering connectivity features on iPhones and Apple Watches. This acquisition will integrate Globalstar into Amazon’s burgeoning low-Earth orbit network, known as Amazon Leo, while ensuring continued connected services between Apple and Amazon.

Strengthening Satellite Ambitions

This merger allows Amazon to take control of Globalstar, thereby expanding upon the previous agreement that Globalstar held with Apple. For some time, Amazon has been developing its proprietary low-orbit satellite constellation, Amazon Leo, which is designed to enhance connectivity in remote areas and directly compete with rival networks like Starlink.

Panos Panay, senior vice president of devices and services at Amazon, commented on the partnership, stating: “We’re excited to support Apple users through the Leo D2D [Direct-2-Device] system, and look forward to working with mobile network partners to help extend coverage to every corner of the planet.”

The History of Apple’s Satellite Choice

Apple first introduced satellite connectivity in 2022 with the iPhone 14, choosing Globalstar as its partner and investing in the company during that time. Reports indicate that Apple initially declined services from Starlink following an ultimatum made by Elon Musk.

Although direct negotiations between Apple and Starlink did not materialize, Starlink subsequently secured a connectivity agreement with T-Mobile, establishing partnerships with various mobile operators globally.

Future Growth and Aviation Integration

Amazon’s immediate focus is on expanding the Leo network. CEO Andy Jassy has stated that Amazon plans to launch “a few thousand more” satellites in upcoming years, with a targeted launch date for mid-2026.

Furthermore, Amazon is enhancing its competition with Starlink by launching an aviation antenna capable of delivering up to gigabit download speeds to commercial aircraft. Delta has already signed on for this service, which is scheduled to become operational in 2028. This competes directly with existing agreements held by Starlink with carriers such as Qatar and British Airways.
